Kewarra Beach is a great place to go Stand up paddle boarding. It is well protected from the southerly winds and picks up a bit of a wave too.
HOW TO GET THERE
Kewarra Beach is located about 20 kms north for Cairns city. Simply head north of the city along the Captain cook Highway. It is well sign posted, you can’t miss it.
You can expect a range of different conditions at Kewarra Beach. If Cairns gets a few days of solid south easterlies you can expect a decent little wave on a low tide. Being sheltered by a headland, it makes it a comfortable place to SUP on those windy day too. Great pace to start a downwinder to Palm Cove from when the wind is up in full force. Also a great place to learn on those calm days.
PARKING AND FACILITIES
Heaps of room to park your car and really close to the beach. Also a public toilet and showers, which are perfect to wash your stand up paddle board after.
STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING LEVEL
Kewarra beach is fine for all levels. Beginners will like the sheltered conditions and the nice flat water. And of course the experts will enjoy the days when the swell picks up. In saying that, it is never a bad idea to ask a local for a bit of local knowledge.
The best time of the year to SUP any where in Far north Queensland is definitely during the winter months (May-October). These are the months we usually get a few waves rolling in too. You can SUP during the summer months, but there are marine stingers present in the water during these months (November-April).
